Ferry fares on the NorthLink Ferries service to Orkney and Shetland will increase by 8.7 per cent from April.

Serco NorthLink Ferries, which operates between Scrabster and Stromness as well as the Aberdeen to Kirkwall and Lerwick routes, has now opened its booking system for the whole of 2024 after the fares increase was confirmed by Transport Scotland.

It applies to fares between April 1 and December 31, 2024. Fares were frozen in 2023 and up to the end of March 2024.

Billy Robb, customer service director for NorthLink Ferries, said: “We are pleased to be able to open our booking system up to December 2024, allowing people to book travel in spring, summer and beyond, both to and from Shetland and Orkney.

“Last year’s passenger numbers show how popular the Northern Isles are with visitors, and we look forward to continuing to support the tourism sector while providing the lifeline service for islanders.”

Serco has operated the Northern Isles service since July 2012, providing scheduled lifeline passenger and freight services to the Northern Isles.
