As more and more vehicle owners take their cars in for repair, mechanics are bracing themselves for the worst.

Kyle Arrowsmith, the manager at McConechy’s garage in Thurso, said the situation is now as bad as he has seen in his 18 years in the trade.

“This last year was the worst... We had four cars in here on Tuesday. They had broken springs, damaged rims and tyres. The vehicles included a Citroen, a Range Rover, a Volkswagen Golf and a Ford Fiesta."

"Someone is going to end up getting killed because of these potholes.” Wick garage owner George Durrand, said he has been changing springs and suspensions on “a non-stop basis”.

“There has been a marked increase this year. It has been the worst I’ve seen over a short period of time. How there has not been a major accident because of a pothole I don’t know. How serious has it got to get before they take notice."
