Maree Todd has backed her boss, health secretary Humza Yousaf, to become the next SNP leader and Scotland’s First Minister.

The Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP said that having worked closely with him as minister for public health, women's health and sport, convinced her that he has the “ability to bring people together, find common ground and identify creative solutions”.

Fellow Highland MSP Emma Roddick, having also backed Mr Yousaf, had to restrict comments on a social media post on Tuesday, saying: “Can’t expect my team to moderate this level of hate and do not want constituents to be confronted with it.”

Ms Todd said: “Our party is packed with talent and it’s great to see a leadership contest that represents this.

“I am endorsing my colleague and friend, Humza Yousaf, because I believe he has the right skills and experience to lead our party and our country.

“I have seen first-hand in my role as junior health minister his ability to bring people together, find common ground and identify creative solutions.

“His recent efforts to avoid strike action in Scotland’s health service demonstrate this well and show that he can deliver under pressure.

“I believe he’ll lead us to independence and help us to build that fairer, more equal country that we all want to see.”
