TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of a much-respected local musician.

John Sutherland, who came from Thurso but was based at Dunnet Head, had been a stalwart of the Caithness music scene since the 1960s.

John, known as Fats, was involved in local bands as a young man and played professionally for many years, touring in America and Europe.

When he returned to the county he set up a recording studio at Dunnet Head and continued to perform. He and his son, Isaac, played at gigs throughout the North and at Dunnet Head along with a host of guests from various parts of the country and overseas. John and Isaac also made and produced CDs for other artistes and recorded their own material.

Many tributes have been paid to John on Isaac’s Facebook page.

They include:

• The world – especially Dunnet Head – will be a dimmer, greyer place, without you, John. Rest in peace.

• I only met him once but he made a lasting impression on me.

• I’m very sorry and very sad to hear about your dad, he was a great man and a great musician. He’ll be missed so much, he really inspired me in music. R.I.P J. Fats.

• Keep playing music and he will live forever through your fingers.

• A song has ended but the melody will linger on.

• You have never walked in your father’s shadow yet I believe his shadow will always walk with you.
