Family fun day being held in Thurso on Saturday
A FAMILY fun day is being held in Thurso this weekend to mark a year-long effort to turn former Highland Council greenhouses into a growing space for herbs, vegetables and house plants.
The event, which is taking place at Olrig Street gardens on Saturday, has been organised by Socially Growing – a local group dedicated to fostering sustainable practices and community engagement.
As well as tours of the greenhouses, there will be a number of free activities, including face painting, arts and crafts and stalls and raffles. A bouncy castle has been made available by Messy Nessy for children to enjoy and North Coast Animal Farm Time will add to the excitement with opportunities for interactive animal encounters. There will also be showcases from talented local acts.
Kalin Wilkinson, the facilities manager at Socially Growing, said."Staff and volunteers have been working around the clock to ensure the greenhouses are ready for what is set to be an amazing day. We are excited to share the results with the public and show how the greenhouses can benefit our community."
Socially Growing has already ventured into local business supply with produce available to the public at its re-fill shop in Rotterdam Street, Thurso and directly from the greenhouses.
The team has also created a unique event space too which will be available to hire for community workshops and events. As the trading company of Thurso Community Development Trust, profits are re-invested in the community.
The fun day will take place from 11 am to 3pm.
