Listeners from Shetland and Sutherland were among those who were kept entertained by the second virtual ceilidh staged by Caithness Macular Society Support Group.

The hour-long event was again hosted and compered by the local sight-loss group's chairman, Eric Farquhar, in the kitchen of his house in Loch Street, Wick.

Eric sang and read poetry, Nancy Nicolson sang and played the boxie, and Highland councillor Willie Mackay performed some toe-tapping tunes on the spoons.

They were joined remotely by Wick RBLS Pipe Band's Alasdair Miller from his home outside the town. Alasdair gave a selection of rousing piping tunes and also played the Jew's harp.

Group members were able to tune in through a telephone link to enjoy the musical performances.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, affecting more than 600,000 people. There are many forms of macular disease but AMD is the most common, usually affecting people over the age of 50.

The Caithness support group is one of several hundred across the UK and it has about 30 members. They have been keeping in contact during the pandemic through monthly phone meetings.
