AN elderly man was rushed to hospital after he was injured when a log rolled off a fire on to a rug and set his living room on fire.

The 70-year-old man, of Ardenlea, Main Street, Castletown was taken to Caithness General Hospital in Wick after the late night drama at his bungalow in Main Street. His injuries were described as not life-threatening.

The man was found to be conscious and breathing when emergency services arrived at the scene.

Firefighters from Thurso took more than 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze after receiving the call at 10.39pm on Wednesday.

The living room was extensively affected by smoke damage with the carpet destroyed.

Thurso-based acting sergeant David Souter said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

The man is believed to have been asleep on the sofa when a log rolled off an open fire onto a rug.

“The male was only affected by smoke inhalation, he was conscious and breathing when emergency services arrived at the scene,” Mr Souter said yesterday.

“He was taken to Caithness General kept in overnight for observation.

“We received an update from hospital staff that it was anticipated the gentleman would be discharged from hospital this morning (Thursday).”

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We can confirm that we transported one male from the scene to Caithness General to receive treatment but cannot confirm the extent of his injuries.”
