Eight positive cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Thurso during the latest seven-day period covered by Public Health Scotland’s interactive dashboard.

The online resource has a map giving the number of positive cases in specific Scottish "neighbourhoods", seven of which are within Caithness.

The latest figures from the national agency show Thurso East and Thurso West each had four positive cases during the period from December 13-19.

If a neighbourhood has fewer than three positive cases the number is presented as "0-2", following a recent change to the reporting system. The five other Caithness neighbourhoods – Caithness North East, Caithness North West, Caithness South, Wick North and Wick South – all come into this category for December 13-19, meaning there could be zero, one or two positive cases in each area.

The dashboard reported 63 positive cases in the Highland local authority area during the seven-day period. The region's seven-day positive rate per 100,000 population stood at 26.7.

The Highland neighbourhood with the highest number of positive cases from December 13-19 was Badenoch and Strathspey Central, with seven.

As previously reported, Thurso's Miller Academy Primary School closed early for the Christmas holidays due to two new positive cases of Covid-19. The school, along with the early learning and childcare, and the Scope child learning programme, was closed on Monday for pupils as a precautionary measure.

A Highland Council spokesperson said at the time: “We are aware of three positive cases of Covid-19 at Miller Academy. NHS Highland’s health protection team are investigating potential close contacts therefore we have made the decision to close the school as a precautionary measure.

"Highland Council continues to work in partnership with NHS Highland health protection team.”

The news followed the council's confirmation on Friday that a staff member at Miller Academy had tested positive for the virus.

Highland Council also confirmed two cases of Covid-19 at Thurso High School last week – a pupil and a staff member.
