Eight beds have been transferred from the Queen Elizabeth wing of Caithness General Hospital.

A PLAN to transfer beds from a ward at Caithness General hospital has gone “smoothly.”

NHS Highland said eight beds at the Queen Elizabeth assessment and rehabilitation wing have been transferred. Four have been moved to the hospital’s Bignold ward with the remainder going to the Harmsworth unit at the Town and County on the outskirts of Wick.

The changes come after it was decided to close the Queen Elizabeth wing as it no longer met modern healthcare requirements. There were also difficulties recruiting staff, said NHS Highland.

Pam Garbe, NHS Highland’s rural general hospitals manager, said: “The transfer of patients to the Bignold ward and Town and County went smoothly. In addition, the first stage of the new day case unit was opened on the second floor of Caithness General.”
