Efforts are being made to bring back a shop-based post office in Wick "as soon as possible" following the closure of the town's High Street branch in February.

Since then, Wick has been served by Glyn and Joy Jackson with their mobile post office. It is available at the riverside car park three days a week, for between three and five hours at a time.

It was reported in March that a new post office outlet was set to be opened within the nearby Poundstretcher store in Macleay Lane.

A London-based Post Office spokesperson said today: “We are working hard to restore a new temporary location in Wick as soon as possible after the unplanned closure of the branch.

"We are very grateful to Glyn and Joy Jackson, who very quickly provided a mobile post office in the area. This restores service at the riverside car park on a Wednesday (10.30am to 2.30pm), Thursday (9am to 2pm) and Friday (11.15am to 2.15pm).

“Unfortunately, there is not the capacity to increase the number of visits by the mobile post office to Wick. Also, with the Good Friday bank holiday there were fewer opportunities to visit and the number of customers on the other days was probably greater than normal.

"We ask for customers to please be patient in the interim whilst we work towards a solution in fixed premises.”

The Jacksons agreed to step in after temporary postmaster Kevin Milkins closed the post office branch at 125-127 High Street on February 20, leaving Wick without a shop-based post office for the second time in just over two years.

Mr Milkins had intended to pull out at the end of March but decided to bring forward his scheduled retirement from the business. He spoke of "operational difficulties" that had been taking their toll on his health.
