Dunbeath gastro pub cites ongoing ‘challenges’ as reason for closure

A gastro pub at Dunbeath has closed but the owners say they will continue to run a business at the site and provide meals at its award-winning cabins.

Jon and Michelle Simmonds own The Bay at the side of the A9 next to the village and took it over just before the Covid lockdown of 2020.

In a post dated August 28 on social media they stated: “We are sorry to announce that the Bay Dunbeath sit-in restaurant will be permanently closing with immediate effect.

“Since taking over two days before lockdown in 2020 the challenges have increased each year to a point where it is no longer viable.

“We will continue to run the cabins and continue to provide them with room service for food, drinks and full bar. You can still experience our great pizzas, desserts and other food items from the comfort and privacy of your cabin, whilst enjoying the amazing sea views.”

The couple say that more information about the Dunbeath Retreat cabins is available at: www.facebook.com/DunbeathRetreat

They also say that any in-date unused vouchers for the restaurant will be refunded and they can also be used for cabin bookings as an option.

“While it is sad to see the sit-in restaurant go, our cabin guests have already been enjoying our great food in the comfort of their cabins on the days the restaurant was closed during August. We will also be adding a great BBQ area onsite from 2025.”

The statement ends with: “We would like to thank all the people who have supported us with the restaurant over the years, J & M x”
