The youth entered a funeral parlour, took a video of the deceased there and posted the footage on social media.

The 16-year-old shouted and swore and laughed about it inside the parlour, Wick Sheriff Court heard.

He admitted a breach of the peace by letter and sentence was deferred.

The court heard he committed the offence after he entered Dunnett’s Funeral Directors in Thurso through an unlocked door on December 30 last year.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has since moved from Caithness to Greater Manchester.

Fiscal David Barclay said the case was unusual in many respects and was understandably upsetting for the relatives of the departed.

Solicitor Laura-Jane McFarlane said the accused had been “really drunk” at the time and was now “deeply ashamed”.

She added: “He is aware of how stressful his behaviour was for family members of the deceased.”

The court was told the boy is subject to a structured deferred sentence imposed at Wick in February in connection with dangerous driving that caused injury to an 83-year-old woman in Castletown. He was said to be progressing well on the order, which runs until next year.

The accused will return to the Wick court then to be sentenced for the funeral parlour incident.
