A teenage drug driver has been put off the road for three years.

Unemployed Robert McLaren (19) was also ordered to carry out 75 hours of unpaid community work after he pleaded guilty at Wick Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Police who stopped him on the A99 near Wick, on March 22, to check his van's documents, got a smell of cannabis and a roadside swipe confirmed he had the drug in his system. A subsequent analysis produced a reading of 2.3 mcg - the legal limit is 2 mcg - of the cannabis-based drug Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

Sentencing McLaren, of Chestnut Avenue, Kirkcaldy, Sheriff Neil Wilson took account of his early plea and limited finances.

A previous conviction for the same type of offence within a 10-year period made the accused subject to the mandatory, increased ban of three years.
