A MAGNIFICENT vista leading the eye across Braemore to the hills beyond... a dizzying view of Berriedale as the soon-to-be-realigned A9 winds its way up the coast... an epic panorama encompassing Dunbeath's harbour and strath... just a few of the spectacular images captured from the air by Caithness photographer Angus Mackay.

Angus, well known for his wedding, commercial and press photography, has opened up new horizons by acquiring a drone and gaining his Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO) – and he was happy to share some of his stunning images with the John O'Groat Journal.

"As a full-time freelance photographer for over 11 years now, I decided I wanted to add another dimension to the services I can offer my clients," Angus explained. "Having bought a drone and enjoyed the fantastic new photographic perspective it gave me, I decided to study towards being able to operate commercially.

"Via a combination of home study and many hours of flying practice, I successfully completed my theory and practical flight exams at a residential course in Edinburgh, which enabled me to apply to the Civil Aviation Authority [CAA] for my PfCO.

"Along with my application, I had to submit a detailed operations manual, which includes outlining safety and operational procedures, and the equipment I will use, and proof that my insurance cover is appropriate. The CAA ‘permission’ enables me to operate small unmanned aircraft, more commonly referred to as drones, of up to 20kg.

"Achieving my PfCO means I can offer a range of photo and videos services across a broad range of sectors and a broad range of applications. These will cover areas such as property and site surveys, for uses from detailed roof and building inspections to property sales.

"I have also had interest from businesses and individuals for aerial imagery to record the progress of their development projects or new builds.

"It also offers an invaluable vantage point, and visual record, for farmers and foresters for planning, reviewing or comparisons.

"The promotional opportunities for the business sector are immense as well, in terms of showing what they have to offer, or even just to promote the amazing area we all live and work in."
