A driver was clocked by police in Caithness at 105mph – described by a sheriff as "a grossly excessive" speed.

Nathan Reynolds (32) pleaded guilty to speeding and was fined £300 and banned from driving for four months.

Wick Sheriff Court was told that Reynolds was caught in a speed trap near Bilbster, on the A882, on May 18.

Police followed him after recording his speed in the 60mph limit. Reynolds pulled into the side of the road after he became aware that officers were following him.

Fiscal David Barclay said that the accused, of Riverside Cottages, Watten, didn't try to justify his actions and readily admitted he had been speeding.

The court heard that the accused was a self-employed signmaker and was a carer to his mother.

Sheriff Neil Wilson commended Reynolds for his early plea and the "reasonable attitude" he had displayed to the offence, but described it as "a serious one" involving "a grossly excessive speed" and added he could see no alternative to disqualification, which he appreciated would impact on the accused's business.
