The court heard the driver had made a mistake.

Volodymr Havdyda (21) was found to be without cover after police stopped him in High Street, Keiss on December 28 last year.

He pleaded guilty by letter at Wick Sheriff Court.

Solicitor Meegan Anderson said Havdyda thought he was covered to drive the car which belonged to a family member, but that was not the case following a change in the policy.

Miss Anderson said confusion was caused by her client sharing the same name as his father.

Fiscal David Barclay accepted it was not a case of a wanton breach.

Havdyda, of 25 East Hill, Wembley, has six points from a subsequent analogous offence.

He was fined £400, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20 and given a further six points, leading to an automatic driving ban.
