Drivers likely to face delays as refurbishment work starts on bridge carrying A9 in Sutherland
Refurbishment works on a bridge carrying the A9 in Sutherland are set to start next week and are scheduled to last five weeks.
BEAR Scotland, which manages and maintains the trunk road on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out the refurbishment works on Strathsteven Bridge.
Located around two miles to the north-east of Golspie, the bridge carries the A9 single carriageway over the Far North Railway Line.
The work is set to start on Monday, May 26, and will generally take place overnight from 8pm to 6a. Traffic lights will be in place, and a convoy system will operate for the first two nights.
A Bear Scotland spokesperson said: “The work will involve structural investigations, repairs to defective concrete, road surfacing and replacing expansion joints. These essential works will help prevent further deterioration.
“It is necessary to install traffic management measures to ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the travelling public.

“Due to the nature of the work, these measures will need to be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the project.
“This will generally consist of a single-lane closure with traffic being controlled via temporary two-way traffic lights.”
A convoy traffic management system will operate from 8pm on Monday, May 26, to 4am on Tuesday, May 27, to allow milling and resurfacing of the northbound lane.
It will operate again from 8pm on Tuesday, May 27, to 4am on Wednesday, May 28, to allow resurfacing of the southbound lane.
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
The spokesperson said: “We will do everything possible to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible.
“We thank all road users and all relevant stakeholders in advance for their patience and encourage them to plan ahead by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date journey information and to leave some extra time to complete their journey.”
