A Glasgow driver stopped police in Wick to ask for directions to the local Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet.

However, officers were somewhat bemused as Ryan Finnigan (47) was way off course... the nearest famous fast food restaurant was 104 miles south, in Inverness.

Officers became suspicious about his demeanour and a drug swipe proved positive. Finnigan was arrested and charged with drug-driving and possession of the Class A drug Diamorphine.

Fiscal depute Grant McLennan said that the police drew their vehicle parallel with Finnigan's Ford Transit in the Scalesburn area of Wick, late on May 18, last year, and they spoke to each other after rolling down their windows.

Mr McLennan told Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday: "“The accused didn’t appear to know which town he was in.”

The fiscal depute said that although Finnigan gave a positive roadside drug swipe, the accused had explained that he was currently on a methadone and diazepam programme for addiction. Methadone was found in the back of his Ford Transit.

A plea of not guilty to the drug-driving charge was accepted by the fiscal depute.

However, on his way south, the following day, Finnigan was again caught drug-driving on the A9 at the Ardullie roundabout. He pleaded guilty to that charge and was fined £300 and banned for a year.

The accused, of Otterswick Place, Glasgow, was fined a further £100 for possession of Diamorphine.
