A lone traveller made a desperate call out for assistance today when his motorhome came off the A9 Causewaymire road in yesterday's blizzards and he was stuck overnight in a ditch.

Trampus Egerton posted a message on a Facebook group called Caithness Road Watch to ask for assistance around 10am today but appeared unclear of his exact location and said it was the "Cathie Mara" wind farm he was stuck beside when he meant Causewaymire.

His post reads: "Does anyone know of a breakdown company that can come out to me asap?

"I'm in a lwb Iveco at the Cathie Mara [sic] wind farm. Been trying to get a breakdown wagon to tow or winch me out all day but the 2 company's I phoned have been attending gritter trucks and hgvs. I am about a foot from the side of the road on a 30 degree angle almost in a deeper ditch.

"The van is my home so I won't leave it, its dangerous for me to stay in it tonight if someone else slips into me. If anyone has a large tractor or a plus 7.5 ton recovery wagon or knows someone that can help tonight or in the morning it would be massively appreciated."

Soon after he sent another plea for help after having no luck getting out the ditch.

Numerous local people gave Trampus advice but some berated him for his decision to venture out in one of the worst snowstorms that Caithness has experiences in many years. One Facebook user wrote: "Hope you get sorted out but why were you travelling around Caithness roads in a camper van with probably the worst snow in the last 20 years?" Another said: "Hopefully make better decisions on the next snow storm."

Another wrote: "First thing I would be doing is write help in the snow on the front of your van and back if possible. People are probably thinking it is abandoned."

Others have offered assistance and provided numbers of local breakdown services. It is unclear, at the time of writing, if he has managed to get back on the road though.

In an update at 5.15pm today it was learned that Trampus was helped by Halkirk man Gavin Munro who pulled him out with his tractor.

Conditions are now easing up and the snow thawing across Caithness.
