Driver on wrong side of road blames 'vehicle fault'

Oncoming traffic had to take evasive action to prevent a collision when confronted by an oncoming vehicle on the wrong side of the road.

Peter Stewart (41) pleaded guilty to careless driving at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday and was fined £150. He also incurred five penalty points.

The court was told that the accused, a farmworker, of Stewart Crescent, Thrumster, had twice crossed the centre line of the road between Watten and Thurso, on July 29, last year.

He blamed a fault in his vehicle which he had intended to get sorted and accepted he should have done so earlier.

The charge was reduced from dangerous driving to one of careless driving.
