An elderly driver knocked down a cyclist after cutting a corner at a Wick junction, the town's sheriff court heard on Wednesday.

James Budge admitted a charge of careless driving and was fined £200. He also incurred four penalty points.

David Barclay said that the 71-year-old immediately stopped his car and was concerned for the cyclist, who escaped serious injury.

The fiscal added: "The accused mentioned to passers-by that he hadn't seen the cyclist."

Police officers carried out a sight test on Budge, of Scarf's Craig Place, Wick, which he passed.

Sheriff Neil Wilson described the accident at Harrowhill, at its junction with Northcote Street, Wick, on June 14 last year, as "a moment's inadvertence" on Budge's part.
