A driver who brought traffic to a near-standstill in Wick town centre turned out to have had an excessive amount of alcohol in his system.

An off-duty policeman tipped off his colleagues after observing factory assembler Fraser Ogg proceeding along High Street at an "unnaturally slow speed" at the head of a tailback of traffic.

He was concerned there might be a reason for him travelling in "such an unusual manner".

Fiscal David Barclay told Wick Sheriff Court on Tuesday that Ogg (25) was asked by police officers to undertake some basic tests which indicated he was unsteady on his feet.

A police doctor who examined the accused found him "drowsy" and his speech was slurred.

Ogg, of Girnigoe Street, Wick, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while unfit through drink or drugs in High Street, Wick, on September 3 last year.

He was fined £380 and was disqualified from driving for a year.
