THE wintry conditions, being experienced in Caithness and elsewhere in the country, are continuing to disrupt travel with more roads closed due to drifting snow.

The A836 road between Thurso and Castletown has been closed while the sections between Reay and Thurso and from Shebster to Thurso are closed due to "blizzard conditions," according to Highland Council.

Other parts of the A836 have also been affected with the Bettyhill to Melvich stretch closed due to snow, with the Tongue to Bettyhill road expected to remain shut overnight while the A838 road between Durness and Tongue is also closed due to drifting snow.

The snowbound section of the A9 between Helmsdale and Berriedale has almost been cleared of the vehicles stranded there – but is likely to stay shut "for several hours yet".

Highland Council has said it has received reports of drivers ignoring road closed signs in Sutherland. "Road closures are put in place with people's safety in mind and those ignoring advice are putting themselves and emergency services at risk. Road teams don't operate between 9pm and 6am," said a spokesperson.
