Dounreay spent more than £600,000 on local projects to benefit the region between 2020 and 2021, a new report shows.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority published details of the amount spent by Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) on so-called socio-economic support.

It showed that DSRL had spent a total of £635,163 supporting the local community through business and other ventures.

Its biggest contribution was to the North Coast Visitor Centre in Thurso, which houses the DSRL heritage collection. DSRL committed £225,000 to the £450,000 project in the 12-month period.

£100,000 was also dedicated to a business mentoring/support hub for Caithness Chamber of Commerce to provide business advice, support and mentoring over a three-year period in the Dounreay travel to work area.

A further £100,000 was earmarked for Covid-19 business support through the Chamber of Commerce, while £80,000 went towards the redevelopment of Strathnaver Museum at Bettyhill.

A total of £34,419 was committed to create a space cluster strategy and local space leadership group in another project led by the Caithness Chamber of Commerce.
