DOUNREAY is responding to the Covid-19 crisis by donating large amounts of safety equipment including masks and protective suits to be used by health service workers.

In a message to staff posted on social media, Dounreay underlined its commitment to supporting the community in the weeks and months ahead.

In the first week of its community response, the site identified some 1200 face masks, 200 protective suits and more than 10,000 pairs of disposable gloves from its stores. These are being transferred to the NHS for use in its facilities in Caithness and Sutherland.

A quantity of personal protective equipment has also been given to Thurso RNLI, while 120 bottles have been delivered to Caithness Chemicals to be filled with hand sanitiser.

The site has also donated £30,000 to the North Highland Initiative for community work supporting vulnerable people and has given unbranded hi-viz waistcoats to a supermarket for staff.

Dounreay managing director Mark Rouse said: "We have reduced operations at the site to a level where we require a minimum number of people to leave their homes each day to keep Dounreay in a safe and secure state.

"For years, we have planned for an emergency that relied upon the community coming to our aid. Now we are working with partners from Highland Council, the NHS and other local organisations in their hour of need to offer support wherever we can.

"We've been able to help in a number of ways already. We are committed to doing whatever we can to provide further help in the days and weeks ahead."
