PEOPLE in Caithness are being warned about the dangers of telephone and internet scams.

It comes from Citizens Advice and Highland Council’s trading standards to coincide with Scams Awareness Month.

They want to draw attention to the type of “scams” most commonly encountered by people living in Caithness and north-west Sutherland.

Local Citizens Advice Bureau manager Jill Smith said: “There have been a number of instances recently where clients have been the victims of telephone and internet fraud within the area.

“The most common approach is via an unsolicited phone call or e-mail and the goods or service offered will often sound like an excellent deal. Often people are persuaded to supply their credit

David MacKenzie, team leader at Trading Standards, said: “Scammers are constantly coming up with new ways to cheat the public out of their hard-earned cash. We are seeking to get the message out that consumers must be constantly on their guard. We work closely with Jill and her team at Caithness CAB to alert local consumers to the dangers and to take action to help where problems have already arisen,” he said.
