Domestic abuser from Thurso urged to comply with programme to address his behaviour

A Thurso man who verbally abused his partner for almost a year has been given a chance to address his problem behaviour.

Graham Young (44) will participate in the Caledonian Programme which advises offenders on domestic issues.

Young previously admitted at Wick Sheriff Court arguing with his partner, Carly Sutherland, at their then home in Thurso between January 1 and December 27, last year.

Over the period, it became clear there was "something building up" in terms of the couple's interaction and the manner in which Ms Sutherland was being spoken to by her partner.

Fiscal David Barclay said: "This behaviour became more frequent, over and above conversations that couples might have."

The situation was subsequently reported to the police and led to Young and Miss Sutherland's 16-year relationship ending.

Sheriff Andrew Berry said on Wednesday that a report on Young's suitability for the Caledonian Programme set out the concern for the fact, whether he was aware or not, that his behaviour had amounted to domestic abuse.

The sheriff added: "There are lots of people who don't understand certain aspects of their behaviour which constitute domestic abuse in the same way that there are people who can't get their head around the fact they have been regarded as stalkers."

The sheriff urged Young to co-operate fully with the Caledonian Programme and added: " You may find out things about yourself that you perhaps didn't realise."

In addition, Young, of Brownhill Road, Thurso, will be under supervision for two years and will carry out 75 hours of unpaid community work.

Sheriff Berry also made him subject to a non-harassment order banning him from having any contact with Ms Sutherland except for arranged family access.
