Diesel cheaper than petrol for first time in 15 years

Diesel is set to remain cheaper than petrol for some considerable time.

THE price of diesel is cheaper than petrol for the first time in 15 years as forecourts in Caithness follow filling stations across the country by cutting prices.

The role reversal comes as retailers purchase diesel at a lower cost and pass on the savings to customers.

RAC Fuel Watch records indicate the last time diesel was cheaper than petrol was 15 years ago on July 17, 2001, before petrol was cheaper again two months later.

However, experts are predicting the price change will last for the foreseeable future as RAC spokesman Simon Williams said imports from the Middle East should keep prices down.

“This latest price cut means we are now well on the way to seeing a UK fuel price flip – where the average price of diesel is, quite rightly, cheaper than unleaded at the pumps,” he said.

“This move should be the catalyst to bring the average price of diesel down from 118.98p per litre to below unleaded’s current price of 117.24p per litre.

“Fifteen years ago when this happened last diesel was cheaper than petrol for two-and-a-half months.

“But with a new supply of diesel being produced from Saudi Arabia there is a real chance we may see the diesel price staying below petrol for some considerable time.”
