THURSO-based battery company, Denchi, have recruited four Caithness students on summer placements.

Three of them – Charlotte Cunningham, Finlay Marshall and Aaron Taylor – are studying HNC Engineering Systems at UHI North Highland College in Thurso while Jason Stebbing is studying Mechanical Engineering at Napier University in Edinburgh.

They are working in the electronics lab at Denchi to help them gain practical experience and will be there until September. The placement started last month.

Charlotte said: " I’m excited to gain the initial experience required to kick-start my career in engineering, and I’m keen to work shoulder to shoulder with professional engineers in the industry."

Finlay stated: " I feel that this opportunity at Denchi will allow me to expand skills in practical, hands-on engineering in a real-world electronics environment" while Aaron said: "The summer placement will greatly benefit me as I’ll gain a better understanding of the practice behind the theory I’ve learned in my education."

Jason commented: "I’m optimistic that the placement in the electronics lab will allow me to get a foot in the door in a future engineering career, and I’m happy to seize an opportunity so close to home."

Their seven-week placements will enable the students to pick up skills on manual testing of PCB’s (printed circuit boards), as well as gaining skills in practical work such as soldering, mechanical assembly, process engineering, and software.

Denchi chief execuitve, Nigel Scott, said: "We are delighted to take on local students and support young people in Caithness who wish to pursue a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics). We aim to educate students about all aspects of the company and how their academic classes tie into real life engineering."

Denchi Group is an engineering and manufacturing business that specialises in high-reliability battery systems. Its customers include the defence industry as well as the industrial and commercial sector.
