Delight as double bow lights up village

Rainbows were relatively rare last year due to unfavourable weather conditions. Retired far north school head teacher Jim Johnston was therefore delighted when he managed to capture on camera not one but two rainbows. He took this early morning shot from his home in Bettyhill looking towards the Aird, the highest point in the village. Secondary rainbows – which are more common than may be thought – are caused by a double reflection of sunlight inside the raindrops. The secondary rainbow is fainter as a result of more light escaping from it and because it is spread over a greater area of the sky. Its colours are also inverted compared to the primary bow, with blue on the outside and red on the inside.
