Debris cleared from farm field after sandwich van crash
DEBRIS from an accident on the A9 at Latheron, in which a sandwich delivery van crashed through a concrete wall and rolled down an embankment, has now been cleaned up.
The fire and rescue service was alerted to the accident around 5.45am on Friday after being contacted by an ambulance crew. Three appliances went to the scene to help free the female driver, who was taken to Caithness General Hospital for treatment.
Motorists heading south could see sandwiches scattered everywhere around the northbound delivery vehicle which had ended up on its side.
Farmer Jim Macgregor, who had cattle and sheep in the field at Latheron Mains, said that Rapsons of Helmsdale arrived on Saturday to recover the van and a squad cleared up all the debris and sandwiches.
Due to the situation of the damaged vehicle, Mr Macgregor, of Remiggy, Lybster, was required to tow it up to the main road with a tractor.
Commenting on the early-morning accident, the farmer said that by the time he arrived on the scene the ambulance was just about to leave.
"The cattle and sheep in the field got such a fright that they kept clear," he said. "I moved them to an adjacent field because of the hole in the wall."
The van belonged to the Greencore Group, a manufacturer of convenience foods which delivers direct to stores.
