Separate deadlines for standing as an MP, registering to vote, or applying for valid photo ID ahead of the General Election are all drawing near.

Time is running out for election hopefuls seeking to throw their hat in the ring to be the county’s next MP.

The General Election will take place on July 4, but would-be candidates seeking to stand still have time to register their interest and appear on the ballot paper.

Highland Council has published its Notice of Election for the two UK parliamentary constituencies within its local authority area - the northernmost of which is the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross seat.

Candidates wishing to stand have until 4pm on Friday, June 7, to submit their nominations. Nomination packs are available to download from the council’s website at www.highland.gov.uk/ge2024.

Candidates must not be disqualified from standing, must satisfy criteria on the day they are nominated and on polling day be at least 18 years old and a British citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen.

There is no requirement in law for you to be a registered elector in the UK.

Meanwhile, the deadline to register to vote is also drawing closer, with midnight on Tuesday, June 18 being the cut off. Anyone wishing to vote in the election at a polling station, using a postal vote or by applying for a proxy vote must ensure they are registered.

For the first time in a UK parliamentary election voters will need to bring photo ID when voting in person at a polling station. Further information on which forms of photo ID will be accepted is available by visiting the Electoral Commission’s website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/voter-id.

Voters who don’t have accepted photo ID, can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate, at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate. The deadline to do this is 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.

Alternatively, voters can apply online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote for a postal vote before the deadline of 5pm on Wednesday, June 19 or arrange for someone to vote on their behalf by appointing a proxy online at www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote by 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.

For more information on registration, postal or proxy voting, people are being advised to visit www.saa.gov.uk/h-wi-vjb or if further advice is required email ero@highland.gov.uk or call 0800 393 783.
