The cruise ship Zaandam became the largest vessel ever to berth at Scrabster harbour when it visited on Saturday.

The 61,396-tonne vessel, owned by Holland America Line, arrived from Dublin with around 1100 passengers on board. It moored alongside the 250-metre east berth of the recently redeveloped St Ola Pier.

The passengers enjoyed a number of excursions around the local area before departing for the Icelandic port of Seydisfjordur.

The Scrabster call was part of a 19-day cruise entitled Voyage of the Vikings which began in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, and finishes in Boston in the USA.

Jason Hamilton, harbour master at Scrabster Harbour Trust, said: “The visit of the Zaandam highlights the improved facilities and additional capacity we now have at Scrabster. We are looking forward to further large vessel calls before our 2022 season ends in September.”
