A CROWD of around 1000 good-natured revellers welcomed 2020 at the New Year street party in Thurso.

The event in Sir John's Square was organised by Hogmanay in Thurso (HIT) with live music from popular local band Cover2Cover.

"We think the turnout was slightly more than last year," a spokesman for HIT said. "The good weather helped.

"It was a very nice atmosphere and everybody was very well behaved.

"We had some new volunteers coming along helping to collect and it was the biggest collection we've had for five years – so we've covered our costs, which is very good.

"It costs between £1500 and £2000 to stage the street party and it is all funded by donations."

"Cover2Cover went down very well – we've had loads of positive comments about the band. We had good support from sponsors as well as volunteers."
