Youngsters from Crossroads Primary School and the newly reopened Scallywags Nursery were delighted to pick up a bumper crop of prizes at Mey and District Gardening Club's annual flower and vegetable show.

The school pupils had been busy working in the school garden and the adjacent nursery one to welcome the nursery children when they started this term, and were delighted to see their efforts being recognised by the club.

The school and the nursery spend a lot of time outside as part of their curriculum and this ties in with their topic of "From field to plate".

Now that the show is over, the children will be enjoying eating their harvest.

Head teacher Pauline Pearson said: "We are fortunate to have an extensive outside area with which to teach children skills for life. This will develop their understanding of the journey of food.

"By growing the produce, we hopefully encourage the children to eat a healthy diet and know where their food originates."
