A CONVOY of 200 vehicles took part in a memorial cruise in Caithness yesterday to promote road safety.

Around 500 people participated in the tribute to those who have lost their lives on local roads.

Cars, lorries and vans took three-and-a-half hours to travel round the county, slowing down at each crash site.

The event was organised by the friends and family of Wick’s Christopher Durrand (17) who was killed when his silver Ford Fiesta crashed at Hastigow Bridge, near Bower, in February.

His father, George Durrand, is delighted so many people turned out for the event and hopes it will make a difference.

"It was great to see so many young people come along to help and support our message," he said.

"It goes to show how caring and respectful young people can be and everything on the day went smoothly and we raised a lot of money for charity."

Motorists raised money by collecting donations during the cruise which is expected to significantly add to the £360 that was raised before the event.
