THERE was a sharp fall in the number of people in the NHS Highland area requiring hospital treatment for coronavirus overnight, despite another increase in Covid-19 cases across the region.

At midnight last night there were only 11 patients receiving treatment for suspected or confirmed coronavirus in the NHS Highland hospitals – down 33 in just 24 hours.

But the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the region broke through the 300 mark after a further eight diagnoses took the overall total to 307.

The figures came against the backdrop of 177 new cases across Scotland as a whole, which has now returned 12,437 positive tests since the pandemic first began.

The national death toll also rose a further 44 to 1620, three of whom have passed away as a result of the coronavirus hotspot at Home Farm care home on Skye.

Across Scotland as a whole, there were 1656 people with either confirmed or suspected Covid-19 in the country's hospitals last night – down from 1720 on Monday.

However, there was a minor rise in the number of them in intensive care, up to 104 from 99 the previous day.

There continues to be no newly diagnosed cases of Covid-19 in the Western Isles, Orkney or Shetland.

NHS Grampian reported a further 15 cases to edge towards 1000 on 946. But there was a large fall in the number of hospital patients in Grampian needing treatment for the virus, down from 130 to 97. Thirteen of those were in intensive care.
