A total of 72 people have now died in the NHS Highland area from either confirmed or suspected Covid-19, up from 50 seven days ago.

In the Highland Council area, which is considerably smaller than the NHS Highland region, the total number of deaths is up by eight and now stands at 30.

Three of those deaths were confirmed in care homes, four were at home and 23 were in hospital.

The figures were released today by the National Records of Scotland and count when Covid-19 has been mentioned on a death certificate as a cause.

Scotland as a whole saw deaths go up to 2272 from 1616 deaths registered a week ago.

In a more detailed breakdown of the national numbers, the majority of deaths were in hospitals (1188), while 886 people died in care homes and 198 people died at home or in another setting.
