Couple fined after 'overstepping the mark' when police arrested their son

A family's celebration night out ended up with them all being arrested, Wick Sheriff Court heard last week.

It happened after Lindsey Wild (38) struck Constable Matthew Thain on his head and obstructed officers, and her partner Kevin Whitehead (37) resisted the police.

Fiscal David Barclay said that the pair, of Tullochard, Scalesburn, Wick, were upset at seeing their son being arrested at The Shore, Wick, in the early hours of April 10, and intervened.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis heard that the lad, now 18, a junior soldier, had come home on leave from the Royal Engineers and the family had all decided to go out for a drink.

Solicitor George Mathers, representing Wild, said: "Probably too much drink was consumed. Something happened and the police became involved. Things became emotional and she assaulted Constable Matthew Thain who was fortunately not injured."

Mr Mathers added: "Miss Wild works as a carer and fears she may lose her job. She has never been in trouble before and is thoroughly ashamed of her behaviour."

Naomi Paterson, for Whitehead, said that he was worried that his son might get into trouble and had "overstepped the mark". The solicitor told the court that the accused, who was also in the army, had been injured in a serious road accident and was still receiving follow-up treatment. Whitehead had a record of offending but the convictions were of some vintage.

He pleaded guilty and was fined £450.

Wild was fined £200 on each of the charges she admitted.
