Highland Council has removed a lock that had been barring one of the entrances to the old part of Wick cemetery.

A spokesman for the local authority said it had been put there by a member of the public.

The matter was brought to the council's attention this week after the lock was found attached to a metal gate at the old section of the cemetery, at the top end on Harrow Road.

The entrance at the other end, adjacent to South Road, was unaffected.

The path leading through the cemetery is well used by walkers as well as people visiting graves.

A council spokesman said today: “This lock was not fitted by us but a member of the public so we have removed it this morning.”
