WORK got under way on Friday on the demolition of Highland Council’s Caithness HQ at Market Place, Wick, to pave the way for the £8 million redevelopment of the town centre site.

The council has awarded a contract to Morgan Sindall to carry out the redevelopment of Market Place. Its sub-contractors, Munros, has removed windows and fittings in recent weeks and has now begun the demolition of the building.

The new three-storey building, together with the refurbished Stafford Place annexe, will accommodate 140 council staff for the first time under one roof.

The new complex will be a base for social work staff presently based at High Street and education, culture and sport staff currently in Rhind House. Eighty staff, including those at Wick service point, have relocated to the Government buildings in Girnigoe Street while the work takes place. The project is due for completion early in 2015.
