HIGHLAND Council house rents are set to go up by 2%.

Members of the finance, housing and resources committee are being asked at their meeting on Wednesday to agree on an average weekly rent rise from £68.99 to £70.37, an increase of £1.38.

The hike will also apply to hostel rents, travelling site pitches and garage sites as well as caretaking and CCTV services.

Committee chairman Dave Fallows said the increase is good news for tenants.

“We have listened to tenants and made efficiencies which for the fourth year running has allowed us to contain the increase to below inflation,” he said.

In the next financial year, the Council will spend £15.5 million on repairs and maintenance of its stock of 13,500 council houses.

It also plans to invest £17.5 million in improvements to existing houses and £23 million to build new houses.
