A total of 22 people have died because of confirmed or suspected coronavirus in the Highland Council area.

It is the first time that the numbers of fatalities have been disclosed according to local authority area and provide what are the most geographically accurate figures yet released.

The statistics also show in what settings people died in the council area, with one person dying in a care home, three people dying at home and 18 in hospital.

The numbers from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) previously located Covid-19 deaths by health board only.

But some critics said that did not offer enough detail to those in the NHS Highland area, which is the largest of any health board in the UK and stretches from Caithness to Kintyre.

According to the board data, 50 people have died in total of Covid-19 – 35 in hospital, eight at home or other non-institutional setting and seven in care homes. That will offer people in the Highland region a more accurate perspective on where the majority of cases have been confirmed.

Nationally, Scotland saw a large rise above 1000 deaths for the first time to a total of 1616 – up from the 962 deaths that were registered seven days ago.

In a more detailed breakdown of the national numbers, the majority of deaths were in hospitals (910) while 537 people died in care homes and 169 people died at home or in another setting.
