THURSO community councillors were not notified about a marking which appeared on Castlegreen Road as part of a traffic calming scheme.

The issue was raised at the latest meeting by chairwoman, Thelma Mackenzie, who explained that there was no indication that the oblong marking with white diagnols was to be installed there.

Retired police officer, Bert Macleod, was unimpressed: "I have never seen the like of this before," he said while his community council colleague, Colin Johnston, described the marking as "ridiculous."

Thurso and Northwest Caithness councillor, Matthew Reiss, said the work is part of the scheme to make the 20mph speed limit permanent and introducing traffic calming. The money, he stressed, came from the Scottish Government in a bid to improve road safety there.
