MELVICH’S Mission Hall Gallery (MHG) has had a facelift and now shines a brighter shade of blue for the opening of the 2018 summer exhibition – aptly called Colour.

The exhibition, which opened last week, has a varied selection of works by 11 local artists with “the energy and colour very evident”, according to gallery owner Tracy Dodson.

“Once again, the gallery is providing local artists with an opportunity to showcase the talent and quality of art on the north coast of Scotland,” she said.

“We’re very pleased to be displaying a number of works by Jenny Bruce from her Icelandic series. These pieces have depth and display an evocative feeling of the cold landscapes of the region.”

There also new works by MHG regulars Meg Telfer and Nicola McLean inspired by local scenes and the colours of the different seasons.

Complementing these are watercolours by Stuart Mingham, textiles by Sharon Crosby, prints by Susie McKenzie and oil pochades by Angela Simpson. An artist new to the gallery is Rhona Graham, who is exhibiting a series of new works based on the sea and coastline of Skerray.

Tracy herself has made several new pieces of glass based on the theme of colour, using vibrant reds, oranges and blues, and has produced a number of brightly coloured glass bowls for the show and oil paintings based on the Melvich Bay beaches and sunsets.

The Get Creative 2018 workshop season has also started. The next workshop is mono printing on Sunday, May 20, with Meg Telfer. No experience is necessary, and all equipment is provided. The workshops have been supported by Melvich Community Council which has provided funding for the materials.

Tracy said: “The gallery is in a great location, at the turn-off to Melvich beach, so can be visited as part of a day out west for people living in Thurso.”

The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm – and by appointment outside these hours. More details are on the website www.mhgmelvich.com or contact Tracy Dodson on 07803 300904.
