Local rescue teams were called out last night (Sunday) following concerns for a person in distress at West Gills.

Members from both the Scrabster and Melvich Coastguard were alerted at 7.44pm after a report was made of a male falling down the embankment at West Gills.

The casualty was promptly located and extracted to a safe location before being passed to the Scottish Ambulance Service for further care.

Thurso lifeboat was also called to assist, providing safety cover in case the casualty ended up in the sea. Crew members from The Taylors used searchlights and a thermal camera to help with the rescue.

The casualty was traced by the coastguard team and the lifeboat was stood down and returned to Scrabster at 9pm. The Taylors was cleaned and made ready for service.
