Coastal flooding risk sparks Moray Firth warnings amid high spring tides and strong winds

Coastal communities living in the Moray, Dornoch, Cromarty and Beauly firths have been warned of possible flooding due to high spring tides and strong winds.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued a number of flood alerts and flood warnings for the region.

Flood alerts – the lowest warning level – are in place for the entire coastline of the Moray, Dornoch, Cromarty and Beauly firths.

And several higher level flood warnings have also been issued – including a stretch of coast from Helmsdale to Embo in Sutherland, with Golspie thought to be at particular risk.

Commenting on the Sutherland warning, a spokesperson for Sepa said: "A combination of high tides and prevailing weather conditions means that flooding from the sea is expected to affect low lying land, roads and properties along the Moray Firth coastline at Golspie.

"Wave overtopping is expected to affect areas at risk of flooding in Golspie include the harbour area and Shore Street.

"Large waves and flooding impacts are expected.

"The greatest risk is around the time of the high tide which is at 1pm on Monday.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188.

"This flood warning update is now in force until further notice and was sent by phone and SMS free of charge to registered customers of our Floodline direct warning service. Elsewhere. heightened flood warnings are also in place between Findhorn and Lossiemouth, and between the Spey Viaduct and Spey Bay.
