OVER 500 people are expected to take part in a special event tomorrow to help promote road safety in Caithness.

Those involved in the Christopher Durrand Memorial Cruise will pass several locations in the county where people have lost their lives in car accidents.

The event has been organised by George Durrand and his partner, Valerie Henderson, in memory of their 17-year-old son who tragically lost his life in February.

Christopher was killed when his silver Ford Fiesta crashed on the B876 road at Hastigrow Bridge, near Bower.

Since the crash, his parents have been promoting road safety, determined no other family will ever have to go through the heartbreak they have suffered.

Mr Durrand hopes the cruise will help get the message across.

“We initially thought that there would be around 400 people taking part, but it has generated so much publicity that the figure has shot up,” he said. “We have already raised £340 for local charities, but we expect to raise a lot more on Sunday.”

The cruise will begin at Oldwick Garage in Wick at 11am and organisers say anyone is welcome to take part.
