Darren Munro is hoping to be named Young Highland Chef of the Year.

A CAITHNESS chef will be hoping to cook up a storm when he battles six others in the Highlands’ premier cooking competition.

Darren Munro (28), from Wick, is preparing for the Young Highland Chef of the Year competition at Burghfield House, Dornoch, on Monday, October 24.

Ever since leaving school 13 years ago, Darren has worked in the hospitality industry and for the past two years has been junior sous chef at Mackay’s Hotel in Wick.

The only chef from Caithness to take part, Darren said it is a huge honour to represent the county and he hopes to go one better than he did last year.

"I competed in the competition last year and did well despite having a few issues with a malfunctioning freezer," he explained.

"I enjoyed the experience and decided that I wanted to take part in it again and win the title. Those on the judging panel are very distinguished and respected which is another reason why I re-entered.

"To have people of their calibre judge your dishes the best would be a huge achievement."

The prestigious competition is being judged by a panel of A-list chefs led by culinary legend Albert Roux.
