THE Scottish Government is being asked to step in urgently to find a solution to the maternity problem in Caithness “before a tragedy happens.”

Caithness Health Action Team (Chat) denies being alarmist and believes a very real threat hangs over the increasing number of local mothers, including first-time mums, who have to go to Inverness to give birth.

The exodus has been exarcerbated following NHS Highland’s decision to downgrade the Wick unit from a consultant to a midwife-led unit.

The campaign group says the health authority seems unable to come up with a solution to prevent the large majority of pregnant women and their families having to make the long haul to Raigmore Hospital.
